Sebastian Vettel should not have been penalised for losing control at Spa-Francorchamps.
That is the opinion of an unlikely supporter of the 23-year-old Red Bull driver: Marc Gene.
Spaniard Gene is Ferrari's occasional test driver, who said the drive-through penalty after Vettel crashed into Jenson Button on Sunday "was totally disproportionate".
"It is true that he was too aggressive, but for there to be a penalty ... he did nothing wrong, it was an incident of the race," Gene wrote in his El Mundo newspaper column.
Niki Lauda's is a harsher critique, predicting that one more mistake for the young German will end his 2010 title chances.
"You're an absolute super-talent but you've taken excessive risks," the former triple world champion wrote in Bild newspaper.
"One more mistake and your world championship will be over. Then you will have to drive for your teammate, which would be the ultimate penalty," said Lauda.
He thinks Vettel is struggling with the pressure.
"You're in the fastest car," Lauda said, addressing Vettel personally. "The pressure can be paralysing, because everyone expects you to be in front and everything else is a disappointment."
Lewis Hamilton, who according to British commentator Martin Brundle is driving better today than in his championship year in 2008, said Vettel's lack of experience is showing.
"The older I get, the more I understand about experience. Mark (Webber) is a very mature man and that definitely helps," said the McLaren driver.
David Coulthard advises his Red Bull successor Vettel to get used to the criticism, observing that "the knives seem to be out for him" now.
"I want to make it clear I am not trying to excuse Sebastian's recent high-profile errors," he wrote in the Telegraph.
"I see a young man who is suffering from his first spell of growing pains," added the veteran of almost 250 races.
"I am not excusing them (the mistakes) - as I have said before, F1 is no finishing school - I'm just saying they are understandable," said Coulthard.

09.03: Seb not worried about his title chances
claims he will still take the title...
Sebastian Vettel is convinced that he will bounce back as a better driver from the recent mistakes that have dented his title charge - after saying the criticisms that have come his way are no surprise.
"Formula 1 is a great show," said Vettel. "If everything goes well, you are the greatest. If you make an error, and some people simply do not understand exactly the reasons why, then you very fast become the idiot. The most important thing, therefore, is that I know the truth myself.
"In Hungary I was asleep during the safety car period and made an error. And in Spa, when I lost the car while overtaking Jenson Button I make a mistake too. But I am open and honest enough to admit that.
"I'm not proud of it, but you cannot change anything other than try to make sure it doesn't happen again. In the end, the mistakes make you a better driver."
Although Vettel's Hungarian and Belgian errors have cost him valuable ground in the world championship, Vettel still thinks he and Red Bull Racing can recover to claim the crown.
"We are a team," he said. "Although we had big problems, we have still scored many points. And not because we were so lucky, but because our package is extremely strong. I do not worry about myself. I know how good we are and I will this year take the title.
"During the first 13 races not everything went smoothly. Nevertheless I am only 31 points behind. They are [his title rivals] - assuming that we maintain our speed - quickly caught up."

[RACE] Seb takes responsability for accident
and apologizes on tv...
Sebastian Vettel took full responsibility for his collision with Jenson Button in the Belgian Grand Prix, and apologised for taking the world champion out of the race.
"First of all, I'm sorry," Vettel told television reporters. "Obviously it was not my intention to destroy his race or mine.
"I was close, I was faster than him. The moment Robert [Kubica] got close behind I knew that he could pass us on the straight because we are not the fastest on the straight. I was very close a couple of times, unfortunately never really close enough.
"I tried to out-brake him on the outside. When I changed from the inside to the outside, I lost the car under braking on the bump and then I then I couldn't really control it anymore and unfortunately crashed into him."
"I think looking back with the rain at the end we could've still managed to get some decent points," Vettel said.
"There were some easy points for us to pick up today - at least second or third. But now we have none for today. Let's see what we can do at the next race."
The German said the brush with Liuzzi had been particularly costly, as he had to complete nearly a full lap at reduced speed with a puncture.
"I was already past him and then he destroyed my left rear tyre," Vettel said. "I had all the way to come back - it was probably the worst spot for it to happen, and that was it."

[FPs] "We still have some work to do"
says sebastian after second fp...
“It’s always tricky with these conditions, track time is limited and tyres are limited. We would love to run more despite the rain, but we don’t have so many tyres and looking at the weekend we might need them for qualifying and the race, so we didn’t want to use them all today. We were looking at the balance, it feels good, but it’s hard when the conditions are changing. We still have some work to do for Saturday and Sunday.”
